On November the eleventh of each year we celebrate this day by remembering and paying honor to all veterans who have served in the United States Armed Services. Everyone who lives in this free country owes a debt to these men and women, especially to the ones who gave their lives to pay for our freedom. November 11 is a legal holiday. Celebrations on this day include parades and speeches. Special services are held at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier in Arlington National Cemetery in Virginia. This service begins with two minutes of silence and then playing "Taps." A wreath is placed at the tomb, which houses the graves of three unknown soldiers who fought and died in World War I, II, and the Korean War. To honor these men, all symbolic of all Americans who gave their lives in all wars, an Army honor guard, the 3rd US Infantry (The Old Guard), keeps vigil day and night. Because of DNA testing the Unknown Soldier from the Vietnam War was identified. His body was disinterred and reburied by his family in St. Louis, Missouri. In a ceremony in Washington D C, a wreath is placed at the Vietnam Veterans Memorial to honor those who died in the Vietnam War.
In 1921, an unknown World War I soldier was buried in Arlington National Cemetery. Similar ceremonies occurred earlier in France at the Arc de Triomphe and England at Westminster Abby. Where an unknown soldier was buried in each nations highest place of honor. These memorial services all took place November 11, the anniversary of the end of World War I on November 11, 1918. At 11:00 am. (the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month of the year 1918), this became known as Armistice Day.
Armistice Day officially became a holiday in the United States in 1926, and a national holiday twelve years later on June 1, 1954 and changing the name to Veterans Day to honor all US veterans. In 1968, new legislation changed the national commemoration of Veterans Day to the fourth Monday in October. It soon became apparent that November 11 was a date of historic significance to many Americans. Therefore in 1978 Congress returned the observance to its traditional date of November 11. So this Thursday, November 11, take time to remember all those who served in our military. Most of you have family members or yourself who served their country. My father fought in World War I. My two brothers and I served during peacetime. See you in church on Sunday and bring a friend. May the peace of the Lord be with you always Roger |

Things You Might Like To Know About The Bible One of the first beverages a guest is offered is a drink of water. This is to recognize him as a person worthy of peaceful reception. To give a drink of water is the simplest way to pledge friendship with a person. The words of Jesus in the Gospel of Mark 9:41 demonstrate this custom, "Anyone who gives you a cup of water in my name because you belong to Christ will certainly not lose his reward." The sharing of food in Eastern cultures is a very special act of hospitality. It is a way of making a covenant of peace and fidelity. When Abimelech wanted a permant covenant with Isaac, the confirmation of that covenant came when Isaac "made a feast for them and they ate and drank" Genesis 26:30. |

Weekly Bible Verse: Who is going to harm you if you are eager to do good? But even if you should suffer for what is right, you are blessed. Do not fear what they fear; do not be frightened. But in your hearts set apart Christ as Lord .. 1Peter 3:12-15 |
